Marimekko: Art of Printmaking –Beauty, Dream, Love

The Museum of Kyoto
Starts 7/4
Founded in Finland, Marimekko is a design house that goes beyond fashion and interior design to propose a new lifestyle and concept. Since 1951, Marimekko has continuously pursued its unique vision: a mission to bring colour, joy, and a positive mindset to people's everyday lives. Their product creation is rooted in a creative process that highly values the ideas and philosophies of its designers, and this vision has been consistently shared with the world.
Marimekko has created over 3,500 unique print designs to date, colouring our fashion and daily lives. These prints possess a timeless appeal, often re-emerging through the reinterpretation of archive designs. In Japan, Marimekko has a long history and the company continues to be loved across generations.

This exhibition highlights the "The Art of Printmaking" that Marimekko has continued to share globally. Using a diary entry by Marimekko's founder, Armi Ratia as a conceptual pathway, the exhibition explores Marimekko’s art of printmaking and creative aesthetic from multiple angles and guides the visitors through the world of Marimekko. The exhibition features a diverse collection of dresses from varied decades, artworks, and printed textiles.
Furthermore, it shines a light on "The Power of Moyo" born from the "The Art of Printmaking ".

The show also features a dynamic presentation of Marimekko’s own Helsinki-based "Printing mill," directed by the art unit plaplax. In a space where the warmth of craftsmanship meets cinematic expression, the creative process is brought to life. A further highlight is an installation by designer Akira Minagawa. Through this dialogue with Marimekko, visitors can witness a design resonance that transcends national borders.
